Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli are one of the power couples of India. However, time and again Anushka has caught herself in a controversy that involve Indian cricket and her husband, India's skipper Virat. The rumour that is going viral is that Indian selectors were busy serving her cups of tea during World Cup 2019 held in England.
Anushka who does not generally retaliate to such gossip took to Instagram to pen down a strongly-worded note on the same. She said that her name has been used in false stories but people should not take her silence as her weakness. Anushka wrote that she was an independent self-made woman who happened to be married to a cricketer.
Former India wicket-keeper and batsman Farokh Engineer sparked the controversy in an interview saying, "All they were doing was getting Anushka Sharma (Kohli’s wife) cups of tea." Not just that, he blasted the current Indian selection committee as a mickey mouse selection committee.
“It’s not like this last piece of ‘news’ has upset me more and that’s why I have decided to break my silence. They have all been as regressive and horrible and malicious and vicious. So, don’t take this letter as my retort to this ‘news’,” Anushka clarified. “My name has been used in fabricated stories claiming that I am a part of closed-door team meetings and influenced selection processes and I have kept silent. My name has been wrongfully used to say how I have been given preferential treatment or how I have overstayed authorised time with my husband on foreign tours which if anyone really cared about finding out facts from the board, would know that I have always and always followed protocol but yet, I kept quiet,” she added in her note.
Even before Kohli and Sharma were married, she was made the scapegoat for Kohli’s poor performance on an Australian tour, with bizarre suggestions which linked her mere presence in the stands to Kohli’s inability to perform. However, after Anushka's statement, Engineer tried to defend himself by saying that he made the comments 'in a jest' and that Anushka is a 'lovely girl'. "I just said it in a jest and it's being made a mountain out of a molehill. Poor Anushka has been dragged into it, she is a lovely girl. Virat Kohli is a brilliant captain and coach Ravi Shastri is extremely good. The entire matter is being blown up unnecessarily," Engineer clarified.
