Announcing the scholarship he wrote: “I’ve created a scholarship at Faber Academy. I have paid the price of a place on my daytime Writing A Novel course and added a £250 stipend to help towards travel and other materials for a writer of colour from a low-income background.
“The reason for doing this is to try and do a little bit to help people access these courses, which are helpful to your writing career. These courses offer peer support, technical help, workshopping of your work, a community and advice and mentorship from me. I know the cost is a barrier, which is why I’m funding this scholarship.
“My mum always said that in times of good fortune, it’s important to do something for your community as well. I was lucky, in the last year, to sign two book contracts, one for a creative writing book out next year, and one for something that’ll be announced soonish. So, I wanted to do something for my community.
“The deadline is 31st August 2021. Get applying. It’s not too onerous a form to fill in, and there’s no monitoring form. I trust you. If you feel like the criteria apply to you, please apply.
“I know this is a drop in the ocean, one place on one course, especially given the week publishing has had. But it’s something. I hope it helps.”
