Since independence in 1947 Mr Narendrabhai Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister with complete and true understanding, appreciation and respect for Indian culture, tradition, heritage and ideals. His call at the UN for International Yoga Day to be observed all over the world every year on June 21 is a brilliant idea. As reported in AV on Nov 8, the Indian Mission at the UN is taking steps to submit a resolution for its adoption by the UN Secretariat. Considering the number and stature of countries lining up to co-sponsor the resolution it is quite safe to assume that the resolution will be adopted by the secretariat. It will then naturally come into effect from 2015.

Yoga is Hinduism’s gift to the humanity. In Hinduism there are six schools of philosophy. Yoga is one of them. It is not faith, belief or religion. In practical application it takes different forms such as Raja Yoga, Kriya Yoga and Hatha Yoga. It is a universal philosophy based on developing a harmonizing system for the body, mind and spirit. Its effect is natural stilling of mind that promotes healthy body, positive thinking and spiritual enlightenment. Being universal in concept and scope it can be practised by anyone and everyone and hence it is now practised almost everywhere in the world. Mr. Modi’s call for its recognition is the right way forward for the humanity.
