Actor Randeep Hooda will play the role of Sarabjit singh in Omung Kumar's biopic on the Indian prisoner and his sister's struggle for his release. He also finalised Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Sarabjit's sister. The director confirmed the news on Twitter, tweeting, “Aishwarya and @RandeepHooda in my next film SARBJIT coming soon.”
Farhan Akhtar and Fawad Khan were amongst the ones rumoured to be considered for the role. Sarabjit was an Indian national convicted of terrorism and spying by a Pakistani court and sentenced to death in 1991 but the government had stayed his execution for an indefinite period in 2008. His sister, Dalbir fought for his release from the Lahore jail but her quest ended tragically when he died in 2013 following a brutal attack by fellow prisoners. This is the first time Aishwarya and Randeep will share screen space. Produced by Sandeep Singh, Zeeshan Quadri and Omung, “Sarabjit” will begin filming in October and will be released in May 2016.
