World Book Day is a charity event held annually in the United Kingdom and Ireland on the first Thursday in March. This year, children geared up to dress up as their favourite characters from books they love. Asian Voice managed to catch hold of some interesting avatars.
Four-year-old Aditya Vikram’s favourite character is Duper Spider-Man. Aditya has created this character by himself and he likes Duper Spider-man because “duper is really intelligent and smart. “Duper’s superhero powers are all of the powers of Marvel Avengers put together,” Aditya said. Aditya wants to become Duper Spider-man when he grows older. In this picture, Aditya is wearing what he calls a Duper Spider-Man costume and is ready to fight all the baddies in this world.”
Author and Journalist Saima Mir said, “My eldest wants to be an arachnid (God help me) from Beast Quest and then 2nd child is going as The Mandalorian.”
Tamanna Karim told us, “My children have to dress as adjectives. My daughter will go as ‘discombobulated’ with a mish-mash of Asian and western clothing hopefully! My son will go as ‘decorative’ because he loves wearing Sherwani/Panjabi.”
Sharmeen Z said that her child wants to be a demon dentist because she found a whole costume with a wig for £4 in the sale last year.
While a STEM professional Iman’s child wanted to be Pippi Longstocking, entrepreneur Shilpa Bilimoria’s child wanted to be a crayon.
What’s heartwarming about World Book Day is that children are still inclined to read.
Charvi (4) loves to read all Julia Donaldson's books. Her mother Charul told us that she has reached a stage where night-time reading has turned reading all by herself. Charvi has a mini library at home. Her mother told us, “Charvi’s communication skills and vocabulary are much advanced for her age. Also, she is quite imaginative and keeps telling us interesting stories. Like we passed a petrol pump the other day and she explained to me what it was as she read in one of her books. Today she came and mentioned to me that ‘Mumma, you know the sun is a star’. I asked her how she knows, to which she referred me to one of the books she has read. We have been reading to her since she was a baby.”
